Glass half full for Alex Cascatău and Bogdan Moldovan on the manic streets of Nuremberg, while Radu Dumitrescu and Mihnea Georgescu experienced nightmares.
Living up to the pundits’ expectations, it only took a few seconds for the 30-car field to bunch up in Turn 1, where hopes were already dashed for quite a large contingent. The West Competition quartet saw their efforts halved right away: the first braking zone caught Georgescu and the second one saw Dumitrescu turned around, facing incoming traffic. Not quite confortable on this start-stop circuit, Cascatau avoided the chaos and turned a low-key 11th on the grid into 4th at the flag, with some smart defending all the way.
As the WCR Academy pair was far beyond the points paying positions, Dumitrescu lit up the field, trying to recover a crucial tenth place that would have gave him pole on the reversed grid for Race 2. Exiting the last turn of the last lap, with the finish line in sight, he was caught in a freak accident with two other cars, prompting a legitimate angry reaction. He duly turned his nerves into positive competitiveness in just a 5-minute break, before making his mark with a stellar recovery in Race 2 from 26th up to 8th.
Equally impressive in the second heat was Bogdan Moldovan who kept out of trouble and pushed forwards from 22nd to pressure and overtake Cascatau for 5th after a very elegant fight that took several minutes to settle in front of the cameras. Once again, it didn’t go right for Georgescu either, a technical issue preventing him from starting the race.
Two times in the top 6 in such atrocious conditions meant that Cascatau rises up to fourth in the standings, while Dumitrescu’s recovery consolidates West Competition Racing’s second place in the teams classification. Moldovan sums more points to keep himself well into the top 10, with the WCR Academy still in fifth. Next up is the one-hour endurace event at the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
