Often, passions are born within us from an early age when the child in each one dreams with open eyes. For Raul Badiu, the dream of participating in the World Rally Championship has existed since childhood when he watched his idols on special stages and hoped that one day he would be among them at the highest level in Motorsport. With small steps, his career has progressed since its debut so far, until the time came that the guy from Sibiu, Romania fulfilled his dream – to participate in the WRC.
The Rally of Sweden is the first stage of the 2019 season in the World Rally Championship for juniors, taking place between February 14-17. Alongside co-pilot Gabriel Lazar, Raul Badiu embarks on the greatest challenge of his career: a season at the highest level in the world competition for pilots under 30 years of age. After many seasons in the Romanian National Rally Championship, participating with the most talented pilots in the world is the ideal step in the career of the Romanian pilot.
Raul and Gabriel have prepared their start in Sweden professionally and seriously, participating in a test session and two rallies with similar conditions before the race this weekend. “I took it from scratch after the tests in Norway, where I learned a new, completely different approach, specific for snow racing. At Winter Rally Covasna and Rally Sarma we have put into practice all the new information and we have managed to be more efficient, faster. There’s still a lot to improve, but we’re on the right track, “Raul said before the recognition runs for the Rally of Sweden.
The Rally of Sweden 2019 takes place over four days of competition, with a total length of 316 kilometers. With 13 crews enrolled in the junior competition, the fight on the special stages will be a tight one. After a short day on Thursday, with just one superspecial in the program, the Badiu / Lazar crew will have three important days in which the two want to prove they are fast, mature and capable of a good result despite the limited snow experience compared to their rivals.
“On Tuesday and Wednesday I made first contact with the special tests and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the roads here and the configuration of the racetrack. It will be a real challenge for us – the stages are fast, technical and require a lot of concentration to be fast from start to finish, “Raul Badiu said on Wednesday evening after the end of the recognition. The first experience with the Ford Fiesta R2T on the snow in Sweden will be on Thursday during the official rally test session.
