Victory in Virginia for Alex Cascatau and West Competition Racing

The wait is over: Alex Cascatău scores his maiden win in Season 5 of Racing League Romania, boosting his title credentials as we enter the second half of the campaign.

Down in 9th at the end of qualifying, little did Cascatău expect from the VIR races. Initially, the pendulum between the closely-paced WCR teammates swung towards Dumitrescu, fourth on the grid. An error threw him down the order after only three turns, but Dumitrescu fought his way back up into the top 10 after a string of stunning overtakes to end up 7th at the flag. Meanwhile, Cascatău made his moves slick in the early phase and finished 4th after a spectacular fight against the incumbing champion and current points leader Cristian Berindea.

Crucially, Bogdan Moldovan crossed the finish line in 10th, which gave him the opportunity to shine from reverse grid pole position. Pumped up after the first heat, Dumitrescu took less than a minute to rise up to second place. The lead changed on lap two, with a brave pass on the outside from Dumitrescu who tried to escape but couldn’t contain the charging Berindea in the latter phase of the race. The final lap saw Dumitrescu attempting to recover his prime spot in Turn 1, but he tapped his rival into a spin. Cascatău rose step by step to third and was best placed to pick up the pieces, avoiding the two to lead for the crucial lap: the last one.

Bogdan Moldovan dropped down to 11th, while Mihai Neg had a similar placement in Race 1 for his first appearance as a member of the Histria eSports Team. Mihnea Georgescu endured a hard time in Virginia with a string of issues.

Currently, both Dumitrescu and Cascatău have scored a win in Season 5 and they are 5th and 6th in the drivers’ standings, their points combined cementing West Competition Racing’s second place in the teams’ classification. Moldovan is 8th, Neg 11th, Georgescu 31st and Catan 32nd.
