Toto Wolff: “Esteban Ocon is an option for Mercedes in 2020”

The year 2019 will be an important season in the career of a driver who will not even appear on the grid. Frenchman Esteban Ocon will look at the performance of Valtteri Bottas with an open mind this season. The expectation is that if the Finn were to perform moderately this season and, like last season, would remain at zero wins, even if bad luck also played a major role, Ocon is in pole position to take over his seat.

Toto Wolff said during the Shakedown of the Mercedes W10, which was done on Wednesday by Valtteri Bottas, that 2019 will be an important year for the Finn: “Valtteri knows he has the full support of the team this year. He is looking to shut up his critics and we have had good conversations after the winter break, he feels good and has completely reset himself. I am looking forward to seeing a nice fight between Valtteri and Lewis this year. And I hope, they will have nice fights with each other and more importantly with our rivals. ”

When asked whether the performance of Bottas in 2019 could also influence the future of Esteban Ocon, Wolff said: “Of course Esteban plays a role in our plans for the future We have options outside of our team for him in 2020, but he is also an option for Mercedes. It depends on the season and the performance of Valtteri this year. ”
