Still we rise: West Competition Racing moves up in Zandvoort

High and mighty: West Competition Racing animated the fight in the front running pack at Zandvoort and made steps in the right direction in the standings after three podium placings.

On paper, there was room for some solid points in Zandvoort, where not only the championship leader was absent, but also the third-placed contender. This meant a good chance for the WCR crew, who set a solid foundation in qualifying: Bogdan Moldovan placed 2nd, Alex Cascatău 4th and Radu Dumitrescu 5th. Further behind, Mihnea Georgescu was starting from 9th and the Histria pair of Mihai Neg and Mihnea Hiru left themselves with work to do from 10th and 17th respectively.

Moldovan drove a solid race and pressed on, but there was no chink in the leader’s armour. Second place was still his best result of the season, ahead of Cascatău and Dumitrescu who staged another episode of their spectacular intra-team duel. Neg kept his cool to end up ninth, while Hiru made great progress early on to claim tenth, the crucial spot that gave him reverse grid pole position. Georgescu was caught in a melee early on and had to retire.
Race two started with the Histria-liveried cars 1 and 2 on the grid, but it didn’t last long. Hiru went on to lead a crazy train of nine cars and ended second (his highest ever placing), with Dumitrescu and Neg close behind. Cascatău and Moldovan also crossed the line within the Top 10, but contacts along the way lowered their points tally due to incurring penalties. Georgescu made up more than 10 places during this heat to end up in the points. All in all, it was an intense fight that many considered as the best of the Racing League Romania campaign.

West Competition Racing is almost certain of finishing second in the teams’ classification, with just two rounds remaining in the upcoming weekends at Kyalami and Brands Hatch. Cascatău and Dumitrescu are closing in on third place – a spot contested not only with two other rivals, but also between themselves.
