Italian squad Petri Corse Motorsport confirms Răzvan Umbrărescu for a full-season campaign in the International GT Open, racing the latest generation of the Bentley Continental GT3.
Following two years in the GT4 European Series, with wins and multiple podiums in both Pro-Am and Silver Cup classes, Răzvan Umbrărescu spent the off-season evaluating his options to graduate to the next echelon in GT Racing, the widespread platform that is GT3. It was a complicated decision to take, choosing not only the car, but also the right team and championship for his further development. He found the best chemistry at a test in Italy with Petri Corse, authorized Bentley dealer in the Peninsula. From there on, his mind was set and a contract has been penned at the end of February.
It’s been more than a decade since a one-off participation in Bucharest for Romanian racing drivers aboard GT3 machinery. Thus, Umbrărescu continues to establish new milestones for motorsport in our country with his unprecedented involvement on the GT scene. Everywhere in the world there are top endurance and GT series for which GT3 is the highest category: mythical races like the Spa 24 hours, the Nurburgring 24 hours or the Bathurst 12 hours can all be conquered using such vehicles.
Familiar with the one-hour sprint format, Răzvan set his sights for 2019 on one of the top series in Europe, where his team will be the flag bearer for British marque Bentley. The International GT Open races on 7 elite tracks used currently in Formula 1 for the Grand Prix in France, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Great Britain, Spain and Italy. His confidence will be boosted by the fact that novelties come one by one: he will race four times on already-known tracks while learning in-depth the intricacies of the car, before he reaches new circuits from September onwards.
In the meantime, now that all contractual details are solved, Umbrărescu is able to focus on his training routine that includes one gruelling month of training at the famed Formula Medicine establishment, in company of other world-class racers. The International GT Open starts on April 27 at Paul Ricard, each race weekend being comprised of two one-hour sprints.
