After having to cancel the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix as well as the Historic Grand Prix due to COVID-19, the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) has swiftly layed out the plans to hold them, as well as the Formula E race, all in 2021. Since 2015, Monaco has held the Historic Grand Prix and the Monaco ePrix biennially, with either race accompanying the Monaco Grand Prix and being held two weeks prior to the Formula 1 race.
But now, the track is attempting to host all three in a five-week span, according to a statement made by ACM on 19 May. The Historic Grand Prix is scheduled for 23-25 April 2021, followed by the Formula E race on 8 May. Formula 1’s Monaco Grand Prix will wrap it all up on 20-23 May, making it the first race to have a provisional date confirmed for 2021.
“To organize three races in the space of one month will be a first for us all at ACM,” said Christian Tornatore, the General Commissioner of the Automobile Club de Monaco per motorsport.com. “The logistical side promises to be complex, but not impossible to manage. Because of the new constraints, we shall need to start setting up the track earlier than usual, at the end of February, instead of 15 March.
“We will then integrate the technical aspects, on and around the track, required by every category that will be involved. “In order to achieve this, we will count on the experience and flexibility of all the persons involved, in order to achieve our objectives.”
ACM’s statement also confirmed that the Historic Grand Prix will continue to keep running on even-numbered years, but will return to a more normal position as it is slated for 13-15 May. If the two-week grace period is still upheld, that would theoretically put the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix on the calendar for 26-29.
