During the meeting with the media which was held yesterday, Toto Wolff answered questions that reflected on the major topics of the moment. Not only his future and the drivers’ contracts but also the engine performance, ahead of the start of the 2020 Formula One season. The Mercedes team principal believes that the performance between the engines is no longer that big, but states that Ferrari is ahead, while Honda and Renault are now on par with Mercedes.
Do you think Mercedes will respond to the 2019 Ferrari power unit’s performance this season?
“Last year’s Ferrari power unit was much more powerful, but this year we haven’t had a chance to confront each other yet. Only in a race weekend, I mean qualifying and race, do you have the perception of the values on track, and as you know … I am never an optimist. We have to catch up, we have to confirm a reliable, powerful and drivable engine, and I hope that we will be able to achieve our goals. But I wouldn’t want to forget Honda and Renault either, I think that practically every single power unit supplier is more or less on an equal footing.”
