Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN
I love that the Alfa Romeo name is back in F1. I was so pleased to see a new livery last year and the evolution of one of the sports oldest privateer teams (Sauber) has been great to see so I want them to do well. Fredrick Vasseur has been instrumental in this turnaround with new sponsorship deals, team re-brands and getting the backing of a major car manufacturer.
They have even been able to re-open their wind tunnel which shows the team is getting itself back together financially. It is again indicative of F1 being less favourable to the privateer ‘Racer’ type team and more comfortable for a Motor Car company with huge resources, to succeed in.
Alfa Romeo have a great history of giving future champions their shot in F1 too. It cannot be co-incidence that most major champions of the last couple of decades got their start at Sauber. This shows a great racing mentality and cannot not be admired.
They have the most experienced driver on the grid in terms of GP starts, Kimi Raikkonen. He is definitely the team leader and I believe he will have the better of Antonio Giovinazzi very quickly this year. I cannot see Giovinazzi lasting very long in the sport and I am even tipping him for the chop mid-season. I think Robert Kubica arriving at the team is more than just the sponsorship he is bringing. I believe he is there as the replacement for Antonio should he underperform and underperform fast.
Now Alfa Romeo have said that their car for 2020 is an entirely new entity. This means they are a bit of a wild card team in my opinion. Cars build from scratch have the potential to be a surprise. They could outperform the entire midfield, but they have an equal chance of falling right to the back if they get it wrong.
Have a lovely week.
