The story concerning the return of the tobacco multinationals is enriched by a new episode: the Codacons has requested clarification from the Antitrust Authority.
Codacons (the Italian coordinating agency of associations for environmental protection and users and consumers rights) intervened in the issue concerning the “Mission Winnow” advertising present since the end of the 2018 season on the Ferrari F1 cars.
Although Philip Morris intends to promote products with a reduced risk for health and scientific research to find alternative solutions to smoking, the debate has opened up on indirect advertising for the tobacco company resulting from exposure of the brand linked to the US company.
Yesterday (Saturday February 16th) Codacons filed a complaint to the Antitrust Authority (the market competition authority) to verify the possible violation of the current regulations, even assuming a seizure of the car, which from tomorrow will be on the circuit in Barcelona for the first week of Formula 1 tests.
Following is the statement published on the official website of Codacons: “Bad start for the new Ferrari, which is likely to remain firm in the starting blocks. Codacons filed in fact a complaint to the Antitrust regarding the car presented yesterday, denouncing what appears to be a form of indirect advertising to tobacco, prohibited by our system. Among the sponsors that appear on the Ferrari that will compete in the next Formula 1 championship, “Mission Winnow” appears, a brand directly linked to the famous tobacco multinational Philip Morris. As is known, the legislation in force in Italy categorically prohibits any form of sponsorship of tobacco and smoking products. the concrete risk, therefore, is that through the sponsor “Mission Winnow” a form of indirect advertising to tobacco is realized, considering the image of the new Ferrari that will travel around the world starting from with the Formula 1 championship.
For this reason, Codacons presents a complaint to the Antitrust Authority to open an investigation into the new Ferrari, verifying the possible violation of the regulations in force, and is ready to request the seizure of the car if the sponsorship of smoking products is ascertained “.
But not only that, even the National Consumers Union is on a war path, according to the statements of its president, Massimiliano Dona: “We have presented a complaint to the Antitrust Authority and the Ministry of Health to ascertain the correctness of the writing and its compliance with to current legislation. It is not the first time that Formula 1 or motorbike races are used to bend the laws, that is to say, advertise tobacco and tobacco products. This is why we ask the two Authorities to ascertain the facts and what Mission Winnow really is “.
