Attendance record for Winter Rally Covasna

The 12th edition of Winter Rally Covasna will see a record numbers of teams at the start. The event continues the tradition of the past few years, when the presence increased significantly in the Dunlop National Rally Championship.

Monitored to become the 2020 stage of the Romanian National Championship Winter Rally Covasna will take place between February 1-3 in the Covasna-Comandau area. Until Monday evening, when there was a deadline for registration, a total of 52 crews announced their participation in this rally which is held on snow.

Three national champions, Constantin Aur (Skoda Fabia R5), Dan Girtofan (Skoda Fabia R5) and Valentin Porcişteanu (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX), the last forlighter, will take the start at the event organized by AutoCrono. At the same time, Raul Badiu (Renault Clio R3T) will warm up here for his first round of the Junior World Rally Championship, the Rally of Sweden, which will take place two weeks later.

In total, 19 crews from Hungary and 3 from Bulgaria will be attributed to the 30 natives for the title of snow champion in Romania. Just over a week ago, in Covasna, 36 teams from France, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Luxembourg competed at the Historic Winter Rally, continuing the tradition of recent years when our country benefited from a massive international presence. Only in 2018, nearly 250 athletes from abroad took the start in events organized under the auspices of FRAS.

Besides Porcişteanu, a two-time winner of Winter Rally Covasna, two other winners from previous editions will be present this time. Antal Kovacs comes to Covasna on board the same Ford Fiesta R5 with which he won in 2018, while Gergo Szabo, the winner of 2012 and 2013, will be present for the sixth time with a Mitsubishi Evo IX.

Two other neighboring pilots, Zoltan Csik and Roland Javorka, will compete with WRCs, a Subaru Impreza WRC S8 and a Mitsubishi Lancer WRC respectively.

The event in the calendar of the FRAS (Federației Române de Automobilism Sportiv) will start on Friday, February 1, with a shakedown, followed by the Special Stage in the center of Covasna. Subsequently, a total of 7 Special Stages will take place, with the last one on Sunday at Halom.
